Energy absorbing articulations

Trains with Jacobs type bogies are widely used in the railway industry. Among other trains the French TGV is provided with this type of bogies. In case of a possible derailment, the cars normally stay on track. The only disadvantage so far: the articulations between the car bodies do not contain energy absorption features.

This is why Voith Turbo Scharfenberg's has developed an articulation that provides optimum safety by integrating collapsible tubes that have been used successfully for decades in the railway industry. These tubes are completed by guiding elements which are integrated in the articulations.

When the admissible compression load (more than 1500 kN) is exceeded, the collapsible tube starts to deform thus absorbing the load.
